Dr. Gregory Cardinal, an esteemed, highly experienced, licensed board-certified podiatry doctor, calls Alexandria, VA, home to his practice, Podiatry in Motion, serving the communities of Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Leesburg, Reston, and Warrenton in Northern Virginia, Maryland, and D.C.

Our doctor does things old-time-style, like how doctors used to make house calls years ago by bringing back the concept of treating people at their homes. House calls are convenient for those like seniors who find it difficult to leave their homes.

Our doctor is here today to explain some facts about neuromas.

What are Neuromas?

Neuromas develop when the nerve tissues thicken through irritation and extreme compression. A Morton’s neuroma is one that develops between the third or fourth toes. Neuromas give you the feeling of having something in your shoe. They may also be painful or cause numbness or tingling, especially when you’re walking.

Dr. Cardinal of Podiatry in Motion, in the DC area, says that pain anywhere in the body is abnormal. Pain decreases your quality of life, causing you to miss out on activities. There are always underlying conditions for pain.

Causes

  • High-heeled shoes
  • Improper foot mechanics
  • Flat feet
  • High arches
  • Toe joint instability
  • Narrow-boxed shoes
  • Tightly laced shoes
  • Plantar nerve involvement
  • Constant pressure on toes pressed together

Symptoms can present between the toes or the ball of the foot, causing pain and discomfort when on your feet. You may experience one or a combination of these signs and symptoms: tingling, numbness, burning sensation, and swelling.

Treatment options

  • Avoid high heels
  • Avoid narrow-boxed shoes
  • Wearing shoes with thick, cushy soles
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Orthotic inserts
  • Foot strengthening and flexibility exercises

It takes the experience and skill of our esteemed podiatry doctor to diagnose and treat your foot pain correctly and to determine if neuromas are the source of your foot pain. We can only begin a treatment plan if we correctly diagnose your foot or ankle problem.
